Florida Keys Day is a day-long advocacy event that provides the people of Monroe County a chance to get up close and personal with lawmakers and staff who shape the policies that affect all organizations in the Florida Keys.
FIRM Board Member and CEO of the Marathon and Lower Keys Association of Realtors (MLKAR) Wayne Carter was in Tallahassee promoting FIRM’s legislative priorities for 2020.
Last year Sen. Anitere Flores introduced a bill attempting to reduce Citizens’ glide path, the allowed amount for windstorm rate increases, from 10% to 5% to give Monroe County Residents relief from 10% increase year after year. The bill made it out of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, but was not heard on the Senate floor.
This year, Sen. Flores has sponsored SB 1204 to attempt to accomplish this goal for Monroe County residents who have paid hundreds of millions of dollars in premiums over claims since 2004.
FIRM’s lobbyists at Capitol Access arranged for Carter to meet with a senior legislative aide to Sen. Doug Broxson (R), chair, Senate Banking and Insurance Committee to explain that Monroe County is a “donor county” when it comes to windstorm insurance in the same way that Florida is a “donor state” to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
