FIRM welcomes new board members

FIRM welcomed Chris Rivett and Thomas Pakenas to the organization’s board of directors this summer.  Both Chris and Tom have skill sets that will assist FIRM in continuing its work ahead to seek a carve-out for Monroe County for Citizens Windstorm rate cap increase, and to advocate for Monroe County residents’ interests as the roll-out of FEMA’s Risk Rating 2.0 draws near.

Chris holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Finance from Central Michigan University.  He began his career in Michigan as a Mortgage Underwriter for Mortgage Guarantee Insurance Corporation (MGIC) and then worked as a Mortgage Banking Underwriting Manager at JP Morgan Chase.  He joined First State Bank of the Florida Keys’ Residential Lending Team in 2014 and currently serves as Assistant Vice President, Residential Lending Manager.

Tom practiced law in Chicago, Illinois for almost 30 years. He retired to Key West in 2017. He currently is Executive Director of the Key West Citizen Review Board, the entity who provides civilian oversight of the Key West Police Department. He has a 50 ton Master Mariner’s License and is a member of the Key West Sunrise Rotary.

Rotating off the board this year is Rich Hlava who served since 2017.  Rich was the chair of the Flood Map Task Force committee which worked closely with the City of Key West in developing the City’s floodmap appeal.  Rich will continue to serve on that committee ex-officio along with former FIRM VP Steve Russ.   Rich also chaired the fundraising committee which introduced two new fundraisers in 2020-21–FIRM’s Mardi Gras fundraiser that was held just before the covid shutdown and the drawing for a stay at Little Palm Island.

FIRM’s volunteer Board of Directors work tirelessly to fulfill FIRM’s mission to advocate for fair and affordable property insurance for the residents of Monroe County and to empower residents to make informed decisions about property insurance coverage, the claims process, mitigation and storm preparedness.
