June marks the beginning of the hurricane season, so it’s a good idea to do an update on your belongings. Since last season, chances are you’ve made updates and purchased new furnishings and tech. So grab your phone and make a video inside and outside your home to document everything in case you have to make a claim.

While you’re at it, verify that you have sufficient coverage for your home if you have to repair or rebuild after a storm.

To document your belongings for FEMA and insurance, use the official DisasterAssistance.gov portal or download the FEMA Mobile App FEMA.gov. These tools allow you to digitally upload your property inventory, receipts, and disaster-related documents.

Take photos and videos of all major household items and valuables. Include their serial numbers if they have them.  For building coverage, list things like your refrigerator and water heater. For contents coverage, list items such as your microwave and valuable items like original artwork.

Don’t forget your landscaping! Landscaping destroyed by a storm may be deductible, either through your homeowners insurance or as a casualty loss deduction on your federal income taxes.
