What is the My Safe Florida Home Program?

The My Safe Florida Home Program was re-enacted in 2022. The program was created to strengthen Florida homes against hurricanes and save homeowners money. The program consists of two primary components:

  • Wind mitigation home inspections to identify those elements of your home’s construction which could be improved to mitigate your home against future wind damages. All inspections will be provided to eligible homeowners free of charge by the State.
  • Wind Mitigation Grant awards for home construction. You may be eligible to apply for a matching grant where for every $1 you provide, the state will provide $2 toward the actual cost of an authorized mitigation project (or 2/3s of the project cost up to $10,000).

Additionally all Floridians can benefit from NO state sales tax (6%) on retail purchases of impact-resistant doors, impact-resistant garage doors and impact-resistant windows from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2024, whether or not they are enrolled in the My Safe Florida Home Program.

What is Flood Mitigation Assistance For Monroe County?

Monroe County participates in a national grant program known as Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) to help with the cost to elevate, demolish/reconstruct and sell properties that are below base flood elevation, at risk for flooding or are so-called repetitive loss properties–properties that have had multiple flood claims.

FIRM collaborated with the City of Key West, Monroe County and the municipalities to develop an education program that would help homeowners navigate the the elevation process.

CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE: You can learn more about the Keyswide Home Elevation Project on FIRM’s website including the steps to elevation, examples of elevation projects, requirements in each of the municipalities, and a list of contractors who have agreed to assist with the FMA grant application.

For more information and details on eligible costs, refer to FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Assistance Guidance Addendum or speak with a Monroe County representative.
