June 1 marks the first day of the 2020 hurricane season. Time is running out to prepare for another busy season.

Our friends at Fair Foundation and Ready.Gov offer great tips to get you and your family storm ready.

  • Do you have flood insurance? Flood insurance policies can take up to 30 days to go into effect, so don’t wait until a storm is approaching to take action.
  • Do you have enough coverage for your home? Contact your insurance agent for an insurance check-up.
  • Stock up on hurricane supplies. Purchase tax-free supplies May 29-June 4.
  • Reinforce your home and business.
  • Plan for evacuations in advance. Where will you go if you have to evacuate?
  • Do you have a Family Emergency Communication Plan? Planning in advance will help ensure that all the members of your household know how to reach each other and where to meet up in an emergency.
  • Are you financially prepared for a hurricane? Strengthen your financial preparedness with the Emergency Financial First Aid Kit.
  • Don’t forget to have a plan for your pets. Be sure that your evacuation location is pet-friendly and prepare a kit of emergency pet supplies. Be sure that your pet is licensed (if required) and up-to-date on vaccines.

The COVID-19 crisis has created added stress and financial hardship making it even more difficult for people to build a hurricane kit and prepare financially. Do what you can to build up your supplies and your funds. Every little bit helps.
