FIRM is conducting two “Hurricane and Readiness Response Forums” to address such topics as wind and flood mitigation methods, insurance claims assistance, Flood Risk Evaluation, and hurricane preparedness.  The first forum is on June 12 in the BOCC Chambers at the Marathon Government Center, 2798 Overseas Highway, and the second is on June 13 at Boondocks, MM 27.  Both forums are from 5:30-7:30 pm and are free to the public thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys.

The forums are being held in response to requests by FIRM’s members to learn more ways to protect their property and to be better prepared for hurricane season.  After so many years without a serious storm, Irma reminded us that we cannot afford “hurricane amnesia.”  Additionally as the rebuilding process continues, it is important that homeowners rebuild in a way that increases their resiliency.

Experts include representatives from the Florida Division of Consumer Services, building inspector and contractor Byron Agababian, and Certified Floodplain Managers from Smart Vent.  Attendees are encouraged to bring an elevation certificate for their property and their insurance policy to take advantage of the Flood Risk Evaluator service.  As always local government officials will be on hand to answer questions as well as FIRM Board members who are knowledgeable in construction, insurance, and mitigation.

The workshops are free, but registration is appreciationed in order to provide ample meeting materials for all attendees.
