Florida Keys Day is an annual event that occurs when the Florida legislature is in session.  Monroe County and city officials, as well as representatives from various other groups and businesses attend to make their positions known to legislators and state government agency representatives.  FIRM has attended for several years and benefits from these interactions.  As is tradition, the Monroe County delegation attended the opening of the House session and was recognized by Rep. Raschein.

This year FIRM spent a busy two days meeting with Sen. Anitere Flores, Rep. Holly Raschein, Office of Insurance Regulation Commissioner David Altmaier, and Division of Consumer Services Tasha Carter.

Discussions centered on the 2018 Citizens Insurance rate freeze ordered by Commissioner Altmaier in response to FIRM’s testimony and research about inadequacies in the windstorm insurance rates and rate settting process.  Also discussed was the status of FIRM’s appeal of the 2017 rate increases currently awaiting judgment before the 1st Appellate Court.  Other discussion focused on claims processing issues.

Until the local and state-wide damages from Hurricane Irma are fully known, it appears that there will be few, if any, either beneficial or harmful insurance law changes in this session.

FIRM will update our website and issue press releases as necessary to keep you informed of new developments.
