Rod Scott, a preservationist and a contractor specializing in flood-hazard mitigation, was in Miami this week meeting with public officials, preservationists, architects and residents to discuss the feasibility of elevating the historic Art Deco structures in South Beach. “Lifting whole buildings may sound drastic,” he said, “but it’s simply a reality that preservationists, property owners and city officials now must confront.” Scott has been communicating with FIRM’s Flood Insurance Committee with the hopes that he can bring his expertise to our next series of Flood Mitigation Workshops.

This Miami Herald article gives excellent insight into the challenges of such an undertaking.  But according to Scott and his colleagues elevating these structures may be the only way to save them.
