A contingent of Monroe County Leaders, including FIRM founder Commissioner Heather Carruthers and FIRM Board member County Legislative Affairs Director Lisa Tennyson, recently visited Washington DC to garner support for the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).  The group also met with lawmakers from other states to educate them about the burden that increasingly unaffordable flood insurance is having on coastal communities. In Florida, coastal counties generate 80% of the State’s GDP.  In the nation, coastal communities generate 46% of the national GDP and 56% of the nation’s energy production.

An article in the Key West Citizen stated “Carruthers and Tennyson’s biggest challenge could be changing some Congress’ members preconceived notion that all people living in the Keys and other areas of the state are wealthy first and second homeowners and can afford to pay large annual premiums.”
